Search strategy

We search the PubMed (www.pubmed.gov), other bibliographic databases (e.g. OVID, Ingenta, Synergy-Blackwell, Proquest, ScienceDirect) and search engine (Google Scholar, www.scholar.google.com) for medical journals originating from Malaysia. We include the journal if it is (1) published by a professional body or institution in Malaysia, (2) currently actively publishing, and (3) has a searchable website or indexed by major databases.

Malaysia and primary care presence

Our search identified 13 journals satisfying our inclusion criteria. We excluded 22 print journals; many of these have ceased publication (see below). The web presence of these included journals allows readers to access the abstracts via PubMed (for the indexed journals) and free full texts via the journal websites. For the period 2000-2007 (accessed date 21st April 2007), these journals published almost 2000 papers originating from Malaysia. Although most of the articles in these journals were written by Malaysians, two of them have a more regional focus: Asia Pac J Public Health and Neurology Asia. The number of primary care research papers in these journals is still rather limited – possibly this reflects the low level of research activity in our discipline rather the reluctance of these journals to publish them.

	*International Medical Journal* (http://www.e-imj.com/) Chief Editor: Prof Dr Tahir Azhar An official publication of the Kulliyah of Medicine, International Islamic University of Malaysia. It is published twice a year since 2002. It is available free in HTML, more recent papers are in PDF version.
	*Malaysian Family Physician* (http://www.ejournal.afpm.org.my) Chief Editor: Assoc Prof CL Teng (tengcl@gmail.com) An official publication of the Academy of Family Physician of Malaysia. It was first published in 1973 as Family Practitioner, and its name was changed to Family Physician in 1979, and finally changed again to the present name in 2006. 	*Medical Journal of* *Malaysia* http://www.mma.org.my/mjm/mmj.htm Chief Editor: Prof John Arokiasamy An official publication of the Malaysian Medical Association. It started in 1946 as *Medical Journal of Malaya,, the name was changed to Medical Journal of Malaysia* in 1971. Abstracts and some HTML full text are available from 1979. It is indexed by Medline from 1953.
	*NCD* *Malaysia* http://www.dph.gov.my/ncd/bulletin/currentissue.htm Chief Editor: Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar Published by the Non-Communicable Disease Section, Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health. It is published 3-4 times with a focus on public health, especially regarding chronic diseases. It is available free in PDF version from 2002.
	*Neurology* *Asia* (previously known as Neurological Journal of South East Asia) www.neurology-asia.org Chief Editor: Professor Tan Chong Tin. (Editorial office located at University of Malaya Medical Centre) An official publication of ASEAN Neurological Association (ASNA). It started in 1996 as *Neurology Journal of South-East Asia* in printed form. In 2004 it changed the name to *Neurology Asia* and became an open-access journal and is indexed in DOAJ (www.doaj.org). The primary purpose is to publish the results of study and research in neurology, especially neurological diseases occurring primarily in Asia, and aspects of diseases peculiar to Asia.
	*Tropical Biomedicine* http://www.msptm.org/journal.html Chief Editor: editor@msptm.org An official publication of the Malaysian Society for Parasitology and Tropical Medicine. First started in 1984. The journal is now indexed by Medline. It focused on parasitology, tropical medicine and other related subjects. It is available free in PDF version at its website and also via PubMed from 2004.
